August Announcements

Please take the time to respond to our survey. The club board is always interested in suggestions and comments that improve your dancing experience. To that end we are conducting an electronic survey, please use the following link and help us be a better club:
Balboa Park Survey Page.
If you have not responded to the survey please take the time to share your opinions.  The survey results affect decisions on issues such as the class calendar and music so take a moment and share your thoughts.

In August our smooth/standard dance is Quickstep and the latin/rhythm dance is East Coast Swing.

Quickstep

The quickstep is a light-hearted member of the standard ballroom dances. The movement of the dance is fast and powerfully flowing and sprinkled with syncopations. The upbeat melodies that quickstep is danced to make it suitable for both formal and informal events. This dance might be termed the "joy" dance of modern dancing. While the basic figures are quite simple, the tempo of the music and the whole character of the dance seem to invite a carefree interpretation of its bright rhythm. The beginner will find the basic steps easy to learn and easy to fit the music. The advanced dancer will discover that the music lends itself to an infinite variety of steps. The dancer who masters the fundamentals of the Quickstep will have command of a dance that can never grow stale.

East Coast Swing

East Coast Swing (ECS) belongs to the group of swing dances. It is danced under fast swing music, including rock and roll and boogie-woogie. East Coast Swing can be referred to by many different names in different regions of the United States and the World. It has alternatively been called Eastern Swing, Jitterbug, American Swing, East Coast Lindy, Lindy (not to be confused with Lindy Hop), and Triple Swing. Other variants of East Coast Swing that use altered footwork forms are known as Single Swing or "Single-step Swing" (where the triple step is replaced by a single step forming a slow, slow, quick, quick rhythm common to Foxtrot), and Double Swing (using a tap-step footwork pattern).

Calendar
We will be dark on Friday August 18th.

The August ballroom party is on the 11th and will be hosted by Jason Rivers - dance champion and resident teacher for the San Diego Wheelchair Dancers Organization.

During the course of the evening we will have at least two mixers and a fun lesson.  We invite you to bring finger food snacks on disposable platters.

Things to know
Please try to use small bills when paying the class entrance fee.  We only have a small amount of cash to make change at the beginning of the evening.  When you try to pay with a $50 or $100 you slow down the line and make it difficult for the cashiers to do their job.

During summer the regular parking lot can be unexpectedly full due to events in the south end of the park.  It would be a good idea to arrive a little early until these activities diminish.

Facebook
The club now has a Facebook group page.  We invite you to join the page to allow the cub to better communicate and allow you to engage with your fellow dancers.  Our instructors will be posting tips and special events to improve your dancing, the board will post last minute calendar changes and parking warnings, and we will have photos and videos of special events like the showcase at the San Diego County Fair. We would also like you to post your music suggestions and get comments from other club members.
